Strep Throat in Children: Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment 👧🦠| Dr Riya

A sore throat is common in children, but not every sore throat is caused by the same infection. One important bacterial cause is Strep Throat, an infection caused by Group A Streptococcus (GAS) bacteria. Early diagnosis and proper treatment help relieve symptoms, prevent complications, and reduce the spread of infection.

What is Strep Throat?

Strep throat is a bacterial infection that affects the throat and tonsils. Unlike most sore throats caused by viruses, strep throat usually requires antibiotic treatment prescribed by a healthcare professional.

Common Symptoms

Children with strep throat may experience:

  • Sudden severe sore throat

  • Pain while swallowing

  • Fever

  • Red, swollen tonsils (sometimes with white patches)

  • Swollen and tender lymph nodes in the neck

  • Headache

  • Stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting (especially in younger children)

  • Loss of appetite

A cough, runny nose, and hoarseness are more commonly seen with viral infections than with strep throat.

How is Strep Throat Diagnosed?

Your healthcare provider may recommend:

  • A physical examination of the throat

  • A Rapid Strep Test, which provides results within minutes

  • A Throat Swab Culture, which confirms the diagnosis if needed

Testing helps distinguish bacterial infections from viral sore throats, avoiding unnecessary antibiotic use.

Ayurvedic Supportive Care for Sore Throat

Along with appropriate medical treatment, Ayurvedic supportive measures may help soothe throat discomfort. These should be used under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner, especially in children.

Ayurvedic Supportive Measures

Gandush (Therapeutic Gargling/Holding Liquid in the Mouth)

  • Mulethi (Yashtimadhu) decoction may help soothe throat irritation.

  • It should be taken only in the dose advised by a qualified Ayurvedic physician.
